New-candidates-to-host-the-COP25-

Due to the recent Brazil’s renounce to the presidency of the COP25, new negotiations are going on at the COP24 in order to maintain the headquarters of the next Conference in a Latin American country.

After a year of difficult negotiations in Latin America and the Caribbean, Brazil was ready to host the next Climate Conference (COP25), but resigned before being appointed. Costa Rica, Chile and Guatemala have then stepped in and offered themselves as hosts, thus keeping the headquarters of the summit in a Latin American country.

Every year, the conference venue shifts from one region to another. This is essential, as it allows NGOs and countries to emphasize also the climate agendas of each region. In addition, this rotation importantly makes it possible for the civil society of each continent to participate and get closer to the process.

With the candidacy of Costa Rica, Chile and Guatemala, the process of negotiation within the the group of Latin American and Caribbean countries (GRULAC) begins, so to define which country has the support and conditions to accomplish this task. The Climate Change Summit gathers an average of 25 thousand people during the two weeks of negotiations. At the same time, it is also a diplomatic process that lasts a full year. In this scenario, the organizing country takes the leadership before the world to move the climate agenda forward.

At the moment, Guatemala has received the support of Honduras. This selection process is tough; we can not forget that Brazil faced strong opposition from Venezuela when applied for candidacy.
